Wildlife at Rancho Los Tres Corrales
Life on the ranch comes with its own cast of wild characters—from the awe-inspiring to the occasionally annoying. Whether you’re a nature lover, a budding biologist, or just enjoy spotting critters in their natural habitat, our ranch offers plenty of opportunities to connect with the wild side of South Texas.
Creatures Worth Watching
Keep your eyes open for some truly special guests on the property:
- Great Blue Heron – Graceful, tall, and often seen stalking the pond’s edge.
- Texas Indigo Snake – Sleek, shiny, and a ranch hero—these non-venomous snakes are known to eat rattlesnakes!
- Lightning Bugs (Fireflies) – Magical flashes of light in the evening skies.
- Owls & Bats – Nature’s night shift, keeping insects in check.
- Stick Bugs & Fiddler Crabs – Hard to spot but fun to find, especially near the water.
Birds, Birds, and More Birds… Why So Many Birds? Welcome to the Central Flyway
Rancho Los Tres Corrales sits along the Central Flyway, one of the major migratory routes used by birds traveling between North, Central, and South America. This natural “avian highway” brings a diverse array of birds right over our ranch—especially during spring and fall migrations.
From colorful songbirds to majestic wading birds and birds of prey, the skies above our ranch are constantly changing. You might spot:
- Hummingbirds on their long journey north
- Sandhill cranes flying overhead
- Egrets and herons visiting the pond
- Hawks, owls, and other raptors hunting across the fields
Whether you’re a casual birdwatcher or a seasoned birder with a life list, Rancho Los Tres Corrales offers a front-row seat to the seasonal drama of bird migration. Bring your binoculars and your curiosity—there’s always something in the sky!

The Mysterious Black Witch Moth
This large, nocturnal moth can have a wingspan of up to 7 inches and is often seen fluttering around lights at night. In the Rio Grande Valley, the Black Witch Moth carries an old myth—some believe that if it enters your home, it’s a sign that someone will soon die. Others say it brings luck or fortune, depending on which direction it flies. Whether you believe in the superstition or not, spotting this massive moth is always a moment to remember.
Other Wild Neighbors
You may also spot (or hear rustling from) a variety of South Texas wildlife:
- Wild Hogs & Javelinas
- Raccoons, Opossums, & Armadillos
- Lizards & Snakes (both harmless and not)
⚠️ A Few Critters to Be Cautious Around
Nature’s not all fuzzy and friendly. Be mindful of:
- Fire Ants – Their bites pack a punch, so watch where you step or sit.
- Venomous Snakes – Rare, but possible. Please give all snakes their space.
- Spiders – Most are harmless, but it’s best to look before reaching into brush or woodpiles.
A Note for Visitors
We ask that guests observe wildlife from a distance and avoid feeding or disturbing animals. If you spot something unusual or need help identifying a critter, feel free to ask your hosts!
