Things to Do in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (RGV)

Welcome to the Lower Rio Grande Valley

Spanning 4,300 square miles from Rio Grande City to South Padre Island, the Lower RGV is known for its subtropical climate, rich agricultural roots, and deep cultural ties to Mexico. Nestled along the Central Flyway, it’s also a haven for wildlife and migratory birds—making it one of the most vibrant and unique regions in Texas.

What is the Central Flyway?

The Central Flyway is a major north-south migration route for birds in North America, stretching from Canada to Central and South America. It funnels millions of birds (over 300 bird species) through the Lower Rio Grande Valley each year, making the region a birdwatcher’s paradise and a vital stopover for countless migratory species.

Some of the more exotic and exciting birds you might spot along the Central Flyway here in the Lower Rio Grande Valley include:

  • Green Jay – vibrant and tropical, a favorite among birders
  • Altamira Oriole – striking orange and black, often seen near feeders
  • Plain Chachalaca – a noisy, ground-dwelling bird native to South Texas
  • Roseate Spoonbill – elegant with bright pink plumage and a spoon-shaped bill
  • Great Kiskadee – bold and colorful, easily recognized by its loud call
  • Scissor-tailed Flycatcher – long-tailed and acrobatic, especially beautiful in flight
